Upcoming trial highlights need for renewal
Here's a link to a story I wrote in advance of the trial of Bishop Raymond Lahey, coming up in early May.
OTTAWA (CCN)--When Bishop Raymond Lahey goes to trial on child pornography charges May 4, the anticipated news coverage will reopen wounds caused by the worldwide clerical sexual abuse, regardless of the trial’s outcome.
But observers say the pain provides an opportunity for needed renewal.

Thank you for your reply to my comment posted at “Cool story about the Pope's daily schedule.” Unfortunately, my comment prompted you to repost the article above.
There is no need to remind me that “In Canada we still operate under the principle of the presumption of innocence.” I’m aware of that. However, the article makes it very clear that lay Catholics are guilty. Where is the presumption of innocence there?
In your article, you talk about “needed renewal.” Do you realize that this article is a renewal of the pain and embarrassment the people of the Diocese of Antigonish felt when they learned that the bishop, ‘who apologized to the victims and their families on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church, saying he hoped "to never again have to deal with such reprehensible behaviour,"’ was, himself, arrested for reprehensible behaviour. Your article, which contains apologetics from a canon lawyer, a Catholic nun, and a victim of abuse, is as I said in my previous comment “an insult to Catholics in the Antigonish Diocese and all over the world.” They know why “it has been extremely rare for a bishop to face criminal charges” and so do you.
